A Therapeutic Program to Manage the Effects of Dizziness and Imbalance
Each year more than 90 million American adults experience disequilibrium or balance problems. According to the Vestibular Disorders Association, dizziness
is second only to lower back pain in the number of complaints that
physicians treat. A loss of balance can significantly increase the risk
of falls resulting in trauma.
Normal balance requires the integration of
three sensory systems; visual, vestibular (inner ear), and
somatosensory (skin, muscle, tendon, and joint sensations). When one or
more of these systems is not functioning well, individuals may
experience the symptoms of balance disorders. Common symptoms may
include:
- Episodes of spinning or dizziness (vertigo)
- Periods of lightheadedness
- Feelings of faintness (syncope)
- Problems with eye-head coordination
- Poor balance (disequilibrium); difficulty in sitting, standing, bending, and walking.
